Nana Plaza Go Go Bars - Bangkok Nightlife - Nana Plaza Guide - Sukhumvit

Nana Plaza (officially Nana Entertainment Plaza; shortened NEP)  was a mostly empty mini-mall with Thai shops in 1981, a pharmacy, a travel agent, a beauty shop and a couple of restaurants (one of which was Lebanese). A small beer bar, Lucky Luke’s was located in the entranceway, neither on Soi 4 nor in Nana Plaza. It was the beginning of what is now one of the largest red lights districts of the world.

Along with Soi Cowboy Bangkok and Nana Plaza it is one of the three most famous districts that cater to nightlife and prostitution in Bangkok for the western crowds, but has seen lately a rise in Japanese clients, especially the young people, since the high end Japanese bars are quite expensive in Bangkok.

Due to road works in the Sukhumvit and Ratchada area, some existing GoGo bars located between Soi 16 and Soi 14 had to move location, like the still existing Rainbow Bar and some others (Rosemary 1 , Rosemary 2 , The Three Roses , the Rainbow Bar , and the Sunshine Bar).

These bars had to close and could not wait so in mid 1982 the Rosemarys (1&2) , The Three Roses and The Rainbow Bar moved into Nana Plaza .  After that every year new Bars opened in Nana Plaza to become what was know as the biggest red light district in the world.  The best period of Nana was undoubtly the 90’s and the first two to three years of 2000.

Many of the firstbars are now non existant:  The Private Dancer , the Mon Cherie , Bubble Gum , Asian Intrigue , XTC, Slitz! A Gogo, Madison and Woodstock.

The Plaza is in the shape of a square, with a single opening on the western side, and consists of a ground floor with a lot of Beer Bars (located at the old car park) and GoGo Bars and two additional floors with more GoGo Bars, short time Hotels and even a small open beauty salon and Barber Shop.

However, ladyboys have been taken over a lot of bars lately, bars that used to be operated having female dancers have now been replaced by operated alternatives (Obsession (ground floor), Casanova, Temptations (middle floor), Carnival and Cascades (top floor).

Nana Plaza is a common setting of the crime novels by John Burdett.
